It’s award season again (well it’s always award season somewhere) and I’m positively chuffed to have scooped prizes for two of my videos in the 2024 Telly Awards. I’m not sure how big a deal the Telly Awards are, but it feels awfully nice to be told that a bunch of people who aren’t related to you (and are therefore legally and morally obliged to heap praise on you, lest you have a massive sulk) like your work.
Agile…It’s not what you think
The first award was for a video to encourage non-developers to find out more about agile methodologies. When you work in a software company, pretty much everyone knows about Agile and most people have an opinion about it. When you’re not actually a software developer, you might think it’s completely irrelevant. But you’d be wrong and that was the point of the video. Starting with the misconceptions and reasons people have for not finding out more, we made a pretty solid case for at least finding out more. As usual, the turnaround was pretty tight and I only had standard stock footage to hand, so to spice things up and make it more interesting I called up the trusty scribble effect! Often forgotten, frequently misused, but always good fun and very colourful. The voiceover for this was by the epic voiceover talent Pat McGraw with the acting talents of Dominic Mulreany.

UA Ireland…A great bunch of lads
Taking its name from probably one of the funniest ever episodes of Father Ted, I made this video to help some colleagues who were giving a presentation to help teams from around the world learn a little bit more about their fellow technical communicators in Ireland. Rather than create a long-winded and boring video stuffed with dreary corporate facts and figures, I created a spoof travel video highlighting the most important things you need to know about Ireland (oh and the fact there are two SAP offices there). By playing on some of the stereotypes about Ireland, the end result was a lighthearted and memorable that communicated our personality and our fun side. And in case you’re wondering, I used four accents in the voiceover.
