Video Portfolio Deep Dive

Welcome to my portfolio deep dive! Here, you’ll find a small selection of video projects that showcase the journey from concept to final delivery. Each project tells a unique story shaped by the client’s vision and brief, specific challenges, and creative problem-solving along the way. I’ll walk you through the client’s (sometimes vague) briefs, how I overcame obstacles, and the creative methods I used to bring concepts to life. You’ll get a better insight into my process, from pre-production to post, and the various roles I take played — from direction and production to visual design and editing.

FlexBelt™ – Let’s get back to the office

Brief

After the pandemic, people were understandably reluctant to come back to the office. The brief for this project was to produce a video that says “Yes, it’s been a long time, and yes the thought of coming back is a little scary but don’t worry…we have everything covered!”

Process

After running brainstorming sessions with stakeholders to understand people’s reluctance to come back to the office, I took all of their concerns and worries turned them into a funny, fictional, and completely unnecessary product. I wanted to make people curious and feel better about coming back. Above all, I wanted to make people smile.

This video won a Bronze Stevie Award, which was nice.

Agile for Non-Developers

Brief

People often assume that Agile is only for software developers when in fact it’s useful in a whole host of roles. The brief for this video was to persuade people to find out more about Agile and sign up for training.

Process

The challenge was that many people had already decided that Agile wasn’t relevant to them so I took their preconceptions and used them to create a light-hearted video with the tagline: “It’s not as bad as you think!”. A short turnaround and limited budget meant that the only option was to use stock footage but I used the scribble effect to make it more interesting. Often forgotten and frequently misused, scribbles are always good fun!

This video won a Silver award in the 2024 Telly Awards.

UA Ireland: A great bunch of lads

Brief

Some colleagues were giving a presentation to showcase Ireland and help teams from around the world learn a little bit more about their Irish colleagues so they asked me to create a video.

Process

Instead of a boring PowerPoint-pretending-to-be-a-video video stuffed with dry corporate facts and figures, I created a spoof travel video highlighting the most important things you need to know about Ireland (and the two SAP offices there). I wanted to play on some of the stereotypes about Ireland to create something lighthearted and memorable that communicated our fun side rather than lots of demographic data that people would forget instantly.

This video won a Bronze award in the 2024 Telly Awards.

Life@SAP Ireland

Brief

The local customer support department in Ireland approached me because they needed to boost recruitment among recent college graduates and also to raise their profile internally to encourage further investment in the department’s locations in Dublin and Galway.

Process

The client knew they needed some sort of video with strict brand compliance but weren’t sure what kind so I split the brief into two sections. For the graduate recruitment piece I created three short videos for featuring members of the team in both locations talking about life on the team. Square versions of these videos would be published on social media while widescreen versions would be used at roadshow events and presentations. For the investment piece I created a promo video which showcased Ireland and the talented workforce to executives.

DevPool Interactive Video

Unfortunately you can’t test the full interactive experience here for technical reasons but you can still watch this play through to get a feel for it.

Brief

My prototyping team wanted to showcase a new interactive video format to allow technical communicators to make more effective instructional videos. We needed to demonstrate what was possible live on stage at an internal conference with 600 attendees.

Process

Finding a topic that would be relevant to a global audience was challenging so I picked sandwiches because they’re pretty universal. To add a bit of fun, I chose Deadpool as our star, which also gave us some nice wordplay in the form of Devpool (because we work with developers?!). After mapping out the narrative storylines, I wrote the script, purchased the props, briefed my crew, and filmed everything. The final step was publishing the video using the interactive video tool and presenting the video.

SAP Enterprise Adoption 2022

Brief

Our executive team wanted to create a year in review video series to celebrate the successes achieved by teams around the world in their own words. They wanted a promo video to be shown at a global all hands and 12 interview videos to be published on our internal website. The turnaround time was 1 month.

Process

With 30 contributors across 6 time zones I had to figure out who could be filmed in our studio in Germany and who needed to be filmed remotely. I liaised with the executive comms team, prepared speaker briefings, wrote interview questions, and conducted interviews. I also defined the look and feel of the video series. Post-production was handled by a team of video experts and I co-ordinated their work and dealt with last-minute changes to interviewee list.

Presales 80s Workout

Brief

Our regional all hands call was held in January and the leadership team wanted something that would help colleagues shake off the lethargy of winter and feel energized about the year ahead.

Process

This project came up during the first COVID lockdown so people were stuck at home and feeling less than enthusiastic about work. I decided to take advantage of the fact that people were doing online workouts and create a retro 80s-inspired video that would blow away the cobwebs. I sent colleagues in EMEA details of workout routine as well as an audio track and asked them to submit videos of themselves doing the workout wearing ridiculous outfits. It was designed to brighten their day, be fun, and make people feel involved when they saw themselves on-screen during the all hands.

Infiltration Explainer

Brief

Our team built a product that tackled something called “infiltration”. It’s a really important topic in sustainability and agriculture, but it’s notoriously difficult to explain. In presentations they’d regularly use a dozen slides to explain it and people still weren’t completely sure what it all meant. They asked me to produce a video to explain it in simple terms that anyone could understand.

Process

The hardest part of this project was understanding infiltration myself. After lots of research, I stripped the concept down to its core and presented it as a human-centered story using simple animations. The finished video became a core part of all presentations and it helped boost adoption of the product.

We Spread the Word

Brief

After a long year during which the regional presales organization battled through the various challenges presented by COVID, the executive leadership team wanted to play a video at the start of the Q4 all hands call to thank the teams around EMEA for their hard work during the year.

Process

With the all hands call taking place in the weeks leading up to Christmas we decided in a brainstorming session to take our inspiration from the superhero movies that were showing on TV at the time. I wanted to recreate a Marvel-style movie trailer that communicated key messages from leadership while also acknowledging the unit’s achievements over the year. The video used a combination of stock footage, vector graphics, and a 3D city which I created from scratch.
